Services
- General issues/queries can be directed to Student Services or your department.
- Go to Student Services if you lose your uni ID card. You will have to pay £10 to get a replacement. You'll need it for the libraries and the medical school, as well as if you are a meal plan student.
- There are multiple sources of support, for academic, personal, and health issues etc. Access information on those here.
- International students have extra support from the International Students Advisory Service.
- Banks on campus: 2x Lloyds TSB, a Santander and a Barclays.
- Instead of using the main my.bham portal, use weblearn.bham.ac.uk to go straight to WebCT, and mail.bham.ac.uk for your email.
- Download the UoB Student App for news, a map of campus, access to library services, and to book a computer.
- You can see how busy a computer cluster is by going to the my.computing tab on my.bham. The library's one is here for example. You can look at opening hours here.
- Join a GP. Use the NHS to find a local one, or use the University Medical Practice if it's you're nearest. It's B9 on the campus map, nearby to halls and just past Pritchatts Park.
Social stuff
- The Vale is not the epitome of the freshers experience. It's about the people.
- You meet too many people in freshers. Some will continue as friends.
- If you're not a big clubber/drinker, there will be other things to go to so don't worry.
- Fab n' Fresh (or just Fab), the Saturday night at the Guild is more attended by non-freshers, as they've gotten used to the usual nights in the city, and it's an easy and good night to go to. You could still go as a fresher.
- Sports groups are quite social. They have their own night at the Guild too.
- Join societies you'll realistically go to. Along with sports teams they usually do sample sessions before you have to make up your mind. Info on the society and sports fairs is on this page.
- Buy a 16-25 student railcard. It'll add up even if you only use it from Uni station to New Street, so get one from here - it costs £28 for a 1/3 off your train fares.
- Buy books second-hand from those in the higher years.
- If you live in a hall in Selly Oak, don't buy alcohol from Tesco. Go to Drinks 2 Go.
- Info for membership of the university's sport facilities is here.
- Your lectures and seminars may not be in your department very often, so expect to get to know the campus.
- There is a fruit market on campus, and a farmers market on the last Wednesday of every month.
- Medical students are at the Medical School a lot. They are rarely on the main campus so to speak.
General things
- If you go there you will get lost in Gatecrasher.
- You'll quickly get bored of the spam from promoters on facebook and their flyers on campus. Learn to ignore unless you're looking to go.
- Take advantage of your lecturer's office hours. Building up rapport will be useful.
