Guild of Students 101

  • The students union, but called the Guild of Students, or just the Guild.
  • You are automatically a member when you are a student.
  • Run by, as well as supporting and representing University of Birmingham students.
  • Provides support, services, and events to promote the best student life at Birmingham.
  • In the first and one of the largest purpose-built student union buildings, O1 on the campus map.
  • Funded partly by a grant from the University (40%), as well as by income from its activities (45%). See more info.
  • Support services - the Advice and Representation Centre (ARC), JobZone, the SHAC letting agency.
  • Societies and volunteering - provides facilities, funding and resources to student run groups.
  • Democratic structures - overseen by 7 sabbatical officers who are elected students who take a year out of their studies; they are in essence the government. Guild Council is a kind of Parliament, and has councillors who are students from different academic schools, societies, and representation groups; they vote on policy and hold the officers to account. Student Voice coordinates these with elections.
  • Campaigning - on university, local and national issues.
  • Larger events - Freshers Fest, Freshers Ball, Graduation Ball, as well as Vale Fireworks.
  • Shops and services - Joes Bar, Subway,  Costa Coffee, Santander, STA Travel, Upper Cutz (hairdressers), Zest (university merchandise), FixIt (IT and print store).
