University teams play in leagues against other universities, such as in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sports) league. There are about 52 of these sports clubs. There are also a number of sports societies. On top of that, there are a host of activities - so if you aren't in a university team, you could still play the sport, such as in an intra-league team (you just wouldn't be playing against other universities).
Sports clubs - how to join
Go to the Sports Fair, which is expected to be on the Wednesday 25th September 2013. You'll be able to find out more from the club, and when you can try out. These are usually within a couple of days, and will narrow down the group to those joining the team. There may be a development squad where you would still learn to play, so if you come close to making the team but miss out, you might be invited to this, and potentially later in your time at the university.
Sports clubs - membership and training
It obviously depends on the club, but training is usually in the early morning, between 7-9ish, or after lectures, between 6-8ish. There could be between roughly 2-6 hours of training per week, and 1 or 2 matches depending on the league your team is in.
Membership costs vary depending on the club you're in, and the team you play for, but it's usually around £90 to cover facilities, referees for matches etc. Team kit costs an extra £25-£100, depending on how much you decide to buy. The minimum would obviously be depending on the club, but usually shorts and a shirt for matches.
Intra-league
This league is different, so if you didn't make a university team, you can still play the sport in a league. Intra-league teams will play within the university, rather than against other universities. It's obviously more participation-focused and teams may be from a particular department, society, or hall. You can enter a team yourself - more information.
